Heinz Academy’s Competition Team kicked off their season with an unforgettable performance at the Symposium Talent Contest in Cedar Rapids this past weekend. Facing off against ten other studios, the team delivered remarkable performances, earning multiple awards and top rankings.
Among the highlights:
Three solo performances, all receiving high gold rankings.
Ruby, one of the soloists, was awarded a Star Scholarship to participate in Symposium’s Fall Intensive.
The team’s tap routine, “Singin’ In The Rain,” took 1st place in its division.
Their lyrical routine, “Firework,” placed 3rd overall and received the “Talented Teamwork” Judges’ Choice Award.
“Firework” was also selected for the prestigious Best of Show Encore Performance, showcasing its exceptional showmanship and performance quality.
The encore selection led to a whirlwind backstage moment, as the dancers—who hadn’t performed in over four hours—had less than ten minutes to get fully costumed and ready to perform again for a packed audience. Their professionalism and dedication shined through, delivering another stellar performance.
However, beyond the trophies and accolades, Heinz Academy’s dancers made an impact in an even bigger way. Symposium Talent Contest offers a Collect or Contribute program, allowing dancers to either take home their trophies or donate them, with the competition matching the cost of the awards in a charitable donation. This year’s proceeds went to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Without hesitation, Heinz Academy’s dancers chose to contribute their trophies, wanting to “help other kids.”
“We were one of only four studios that made this choice,” said Ms. Jackie, CEO of Heinz Academy. “Instead of walking away with trophies, our dancers walked away with high fives and fist bumps every time their names were called—and I have never been more proud.”
This season is just beginning, and Heinz Academy’s dancers are already proving that success is about more than just winning—it’s about heart, teamwork, and making a difference.
